How is it September already?
It’s been a very busy July/August around here. A lot of description, a lot of new collections coming in, a lot of researchers. Beyond keeping up with all of that, Becky is still working away on the Lands project, Gwen has been dedicating a lot of her time to our digital preservation system migration (and attending the annual Society of American Archivists conference), and Arlene is doing a lot of planning/logistics work on our upcoming space move (and partial collection move) to the first floor of the Library.

64 images from the UAA Advancement photographs thanks to the hard work from Gina Hays of Access Services. Gina is a recent library school graduate and occasionally she spends time with us on loan from Access Services. She’s been having a great time going through the Advancement photographs collection, selecting images that will be of interest to people, scanning them, and doing all the metadata needed to ensure these images are searchable on the Alaska’s Digital Archives.
Other:
It’s been busy on the researcher front! Sometimes people assume that summer is a slow season for us researcher-wise, but that’s absolutely not the case. Summer is when out-of-state researchers visit and they often spend a lot of time with us (even though all of us would much rather be outside on nice days.)
We also do a lot more donor interaction in summers, too. Some of that might be attributed to folks who are cleaning out houses prior to putting them on the market and getting out of Alaska before winter hits, but not always. It’s actually fun to be able to do donor visits and look at or fetch collections in summer because it gives us a chance to get outside during summer for work reasons. Speaking of, thanks to several of our library colleagues from other departments who helped us bring in one larger collection from a donor’s house in July on a truly gorgeous day, when it was just a little bit larger than the archivists’ capacity to handle in one move. Much appreciation goes out to Taylor, Debbie, and Tom for helping us.
