Biographical note:
Larry Pearson’s journalism career included work as news editor for the Minneapolis Tribune, reporter and news desk editor for the Rome Daily American in Italy, and reporter for United Press International. He holds master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota. Pearson taught journalism at the College of St. Thomas in Minnesota, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison before coming to work for the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1985 as a professor in the Department of Journalism and Public Communications. He served as a special consultant to the Alaska House Special Committee on Telecommunications under chairman H.A. “Red” Boucher from 1985 to 1989. Pearson also directed the Center for Information Technology at the University of Alaska Anchorage from 1990 to 1992, hosting the Chugach Conferences on telecommunications issues in Alaska in 1989, 1990, and 1991.

Collection description:
The collection consists of Larry Pearson’s papers concerning telecommunications in Alaska, including those of the Alaska House Special Committee on Telecommunications, the Technology Information Council in the Governor’s office, and subject files related to telecommunications. The files of the House Special Committee on Telecommunications include meeting minutes, reports to the telecommunications committee, and audiocassettes of telecommunications committee meetings. Telecommunications Information Council documents include reports, planning documents, and meeting materials.

Arrangement: The collection is divided into three series:
Series 1: House Special Committee on Telecommunications records; 1977-1988
Series 2: Telecommunications Information Council documents; 1989-1993
Series 3: Telecommunications research subject files; 1985-1992

Separated materials: Published materials in the collection were removed and some placed into Rare Books. Records relating to the Chugach Conferences and records from the University of Alaska Anchorage Center for Information Technology were placed in separate collections.

Acquisition note: The collection was given to the Archives by Larry Pearson in 1999.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2000. The guide was updated to meet current standard by Arlene Schmuland in 2018. State government documents were removed as they were duplicative of Alaska State Archives holdings. Additional publications were also removed and placed in Rare Books or given to the Alaska State Library. More details about the portions of the collection that were removed in 2018 can be obtained by contacting the Archives.
