Organizational history:
Alaska Professional Communicators began in 1961 as the Alaska Press Women. The first official meeting was held in Fairbanks in September.  Founding members included Kay Kennedy. The purpose of the organization is to encourage high professional journalistic standards and create opportunities for women in Alaska in the field of journalism. The board of directors includes: president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and the Regional Director for Alaska of the National Federation of Press Women. The Alaska Press Women is an affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women. It holds an annual meeting and hosts an annual writing contest for members. In addition, it sponsors seminars and workshops on topics in journalism and communications, presents an annual scholarship to a student in the field of Journalism, and publishes a monthly newsletter Arctic-ulation. In 2006, the organization changed its name to Alaska Professional Communicators.

Collection description:
The collection consists of records concerning the administration, membership, and activities of Alaska Professional Communicators (formerly Alaska Press Women). Included are the constitution and bylaws; board of directors and annual meeting minutes; brochures, notes, schedules, and other records concerning workshops and annual meetings; press releases, newspaper and magazine articles concerning; membership lists and applications; treasurers reports; copies of the Alaska Press Women newsletter Arctic-ulation; and artifacts. There are also scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, brochures, photographs, and other materials concerning the organization and its members.  Note: the collection consists of records by and about the organization.  It does not contain articles written by members on other topics.

Acquisition note: The organization first deposited records with the Archives in 1990.  A deposit agreement was signed at that time. Additional material was added to the collection, and an updated deposit agreement was signed, in 2016.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described prior to 1993. The guide to the collection was updated by Gwen Sieja in 2016 to reflect the organization’s name change and additions to the collection.

Series 6: Newsletter; 1967-1992.

This series consist of copies of the newsletter produced by the Alaska Press Women.  Volume and issue numbers were originally assigned starting in 1971 and started over when the newsletter was entitled Arctic-ulation beginning in 1972 April.  The run of newsletters is incomplete.  Copies of newsletters also appear in Series 3: President’s books and Series 10: Scrapbooks.  The newsletters are arranged chronologically by date.
