In 1969, the University of Alaska in Fairbanks established the Student Orientation Services (SOS) office. (The SOS office was renamed Rural Student Services in 1982 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks). In the 1970s, as Anchorage Community College (ACC) grew, a student Special Services office opened on campus. The office was funded through a federal Trio program grant to provide services to low-income students, particularly Alaska Native students. In 1979, a separate SOS office was established on the ACC campus. In 1985, the Alaska Native Center (ANC) at UAA was established. After the University of Alaska statewide merger of community colleges and four-year universities in 1987, SOS and ANC merged to become Native Student Services (NSS) at UAA and was placed under the Advising and Counseling Center.
