Administrative history:
The UAA Criminal Justice Center was established by the Alaska State Legislature in 1975 as an entity within the statewide University of Alaska system, operating directly under the President of the University. In 1977 the center was reassigned to report to the Chancellor of the Southcentral Region at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The name of the center was changed to the Justice Center in 1979. In 1982, a reorganization of UAA established the School of Justice, which included the Justice Center, as well as academic programs. The Justice Center established the Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center, which is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, in 1984. In 1988, the School of Justice was expanded into a School of Public Affairs. The Justice Center became part of the College of Health in 1996 to reflect the fact that many of the issues that the center researches relate to public health.
Agency functions:
The UAA Justice Center has a mandate to provide statewide justice-related education, research, and service. The degrees offered by the center include a Bachelor of Arts in Justice, a Minor in Justice, a B.A. in Legal Studies, a Minor in Legal Studies, and an Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies. The center also offers a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Paralegal Studies and a Certificate as a Legal Nurse Consultant (LNC) Paralegal. Areas of research include crime and crime prevention, domestic violence, bush justice, juvenile Justice, substance abuse, violence against women, and policing. The Justice Center also publishes the Alaska Justice Forum, a quarterly research publication that explores issues related to crime and the administration justice with a focus on Alaska issues. Members of the center’s faculty and staff have backgrounds in law, police, corrections, and public office and provide justice-related advice and assistance to participants in the legal, judicial, and legislative spheres.
Series description:
This series includes copies of the Alaska Justice Forum, administrative files, reading files, Advisory Board correspondence and minutes, grant files and applications, budget files, files related to bush justice, research files, files relating to natural gas transportation, program assessment files, self-study files, Nancy Fisher Memorial Award files, annual reports, Justice Center 25th Anniversary Open House files, Justice Center histories, and files relating to the Justice Center’s reorganization and restructuring. The series also contains photographs and VHS tapes of educational videos produced by the Justice Center, as well as an audiocassette of Angela Davis speaking at UAA.
Arrangement: Materials received prior to 2016 are arranged by document type. Materials received in 2016 are arranged in original order.
