Agency functions:
University Year for Action (UYA) was a federally supported program, initially created by Lyndon Johnson’s War on Poverty, that offered students the opportunity to volunteer with state and nonprofit agencies for a full year.  Students worked 32 hours per week, earned 10 credits per semester, and received a monthly stipend.  The University of Alaska Anchorage offered the program from 1976 to the 1978 academic year.

Series description:
The collection contains administrative records of the UYA office that includes UAA’s application to participate in the federal program, community agencies’ applications to provide internship opportunities, UYA board correspondence, and Dr. Lewis E. Haines’ (UYA director and Athletics coordinator/director) correspondence.
