New in the Archives, July-August 2021

This month marks the end of the 2020-2021 academic year and the start of the 2021-2022 year. In the “invisible labor” category, Gwen has been working diligently on her 4th year comprehensive faculty review file, as well as continuing her ongoing inventory of audiovisual material in our collections. Arlene finished off a legacy metadata project with our materials in the Alaska’s Digital Archives that involved edits to over 20,000 records.

Research Services

During July and August we provided approximately 190 hours of research services. This includes 156 (!) hours of onsite research appointments, plus virtual appointments, email and phone interactions, and duplication/digitization services.

Alaska Library Cataloging project:

With help from Technical Services faculty and staff, we finally got started on our portion of a project to add our collections into the Alaska Library Catalog. This will add an additional point of access for researchers to find our collections. Thanks to Angela Insaurralde’s hard work, bibliographic records for most of our collections have already been created, and we are now adding subject terms to the records. Rebecca Moorman and Lauren Wallace provided excellent written instructions and in-person training to help us get started, and have been great about answering questions as they have come up. So far, we have handed 20 records off to Lauren to check over and add to the catalog.

Outreach

Gwen Higgins wrote a post on virtual instruction during the pandemic for the Northwest Archivists, Inc. blog.

In August, Gwen worked the library’s table at campus kickoff, along with Christie Ericson.
