Biographical note:
In 1959, Charles “Chuck” Jarecki was in college and his sister had recently graduated high school in Erie, Pennsylvania. They spent their summer driving Chuck’s truck from Erie to San Diego, then to Montana, and then through Canada to ultimately visit Fairbanks and Anchorage in Alaska. Chuck hitch-hiked home after selling his truck, and his sister flew home. Chuck went on to become a well-known rancher and pilot in Montana.

Collection description:
This collection contains three DVD copies of films Chuck Jarecki made on a 16mm video camera as he and his sister drove through the Yukon and Alaska. The first DVD depicts the Teslin Lake area, the Yukon ferry at Carmacks, Dawson City, the Big Delta area, Creamer’s Dairy in Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, and a flight to and landing in Utqiagvik (Barrow at the time), dog mushing, and walrus butchering. Disk 2 depicts a Fairbanks gold dredge, Denali National Park (Mount McKinley National Park at the time), the Matanuska Glacier, Cook Inlet, the road to Homer, a Russian Orthodox cemetery, and a garden. Disk 3 depicts a farm in the Matanuska Valley, a train ride to Fairbanks, gold panning at May Creek near McCarthy, a C-46 landing at May Creek to pick up sacks of ore concentrate, McCarthy, a cemetery, a small rail car, and the flight back to Anchorage on Cordova Airlines.
