Collection summary: Photographs and memorabilia from a couple from Idaho who worked in Anchorage from 1940 to 1941.

Biographical note:
Elizabeth Maxine Preston and Elmo Alexander were married in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. In August of 1940, the couple sailed aboard the Alaska Steamship Company’s ship, the S.S. Aleutian from Seattle to Seward. They continued on to Anchorage, where they worked for the government until November 1941, when they returned to Idaho.

Collection description:
The collection contains postcards and original photographs; a menu and passenger list from the Alexanders’ trip to Alaska aboard the S.S. Aleutian; a menu from a farewell dinner for Commander O.C. Andersen aboard the S.S. Alaska during their return trip to Seattle; and several thimbles, including one made from animal hide, which may have been souvenirs from the couple’s time in Alaska.
