Biographical note:
Based on the context of items this collection was originally kept with, it is possible that Joe Price created this collection. Price graduated from Valley Falls High School in Kansas circa 1918-1919. He enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the U.S.S.Vicksburg during World War I. The U.S.S. Vicksburg sailed in the Southeast Alaska region during the war.

Collection description:
This collection contains photographs of a crew and passengers aboard the U.S.S. Vicksburg and commercially produced postcards of Sitka, Juneau, Cordova, the Copper River, a military parade, a sailor’s prayer, and a poem about sailors. It also contains two souvenir cloth pennants. One reads, “Skagway, Alaska” and the other “Alaska.” There is also an invitation to a dance hosted by the crew of the U.S.S. Vicksburg at the A.B. Hall in Juneau on May 29th.

Related materials: The Kansas State Historical Society holds the enlistment record and discharge paper of Joe Price and multiple photographs of Joe Price, the crew of the U.S.S. Vicksburg, and unidentified people. The KSHS sent a postcard of the U.S.S. Charleston originally with this collection to the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society. Similarly, KSHS sent a Thanksgiving Day menu from a Mare Island Naval training camp to the California State Military Museum.

Custodial history: This collection was originally donated in 2008 to the Kansas State Historical Society by Susan, Brittany, and Sydney Finney with other items belonging to Joe Price.

Acquisition note: This collection was donated to the Alaska Historical Society in 2008 by the Kansas State Historical Society. The Alaska Historical Society retains physical ownership of the collection and placed it on deposit in Archives and Special Collections in 2008.
