Organizational history:
The First Congregational Church of Anchorage was formally established in 1960 with a founding group of five. It is a branch of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches. The first minister, Reverend Gerry Churchill, arrived in 1961. The church started constructing its first building in 1965, and in 1967, the first sermon was given from the new building. The original church building burned down in 1982 but was reconstructed a year later. The church holds regular church services and Sunday Schools and supports charitable programs in Anchorage and around the world.
Collection description:
The collection consists of twelve black and white photographs of damage in Anchorage following the 1964 earthquake. They mainly depict the Turnagain neighborhood slide, damaged houses, and a large, cracked-up concrete building.
