Biographical note:
August “Augie” G. Hiebert was a pioneer of broadcast radio and television throughout Alaska. Born in 1916 in Washington, Hiebert earned his ham radio license at age 15. He moved to Fairbanks, Alaska in 1939 to assist Austin E. “Cap” Lathrop in the set-up of Fairbanks’ first radio station, KFAR. While experimenting with facsimile transmissions, Hiebert stayed on top of wartime transmissions and was the first in Alaska to hear of the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the end of World War II, Hiebert moved to Anchorage to start the KENI radio station. He married Patricia Stadler (with whom he had four daughters) in 1947. In 1953, Hiebert founded Northern Television, Inc. He began broadcasting the KTVA television channel in Anchorage that same year and added the KTVF channel in Fairbanks in 1955. Hiebert went on to start Alaska’s first FM radio station, KNIK, while also acquiring the AM stations KBYR and KFRB. Hiebert pushed for establishing satellite communications in Alaska, earning him the Anchorage Gold Pan Award in 1969. Alaskans watched the Dallas Cowboys play the San Francisco 49ers on KTVA in 1971 as their first live telecast from outside Alaska. When not working in broadcasting, Hiebert served on the UAA Journalism Department Advisory Council and the U.S. Air Force Alaskan Command Civilian Advisory Board. Hiebert sold Northern Television, Inc. in 1997. He died in 2007 in Anchorage.
