Organizational history:
The Great Northern Brewers Club (GNBC) is a nonprofit organization in Anchorage, Alaska dedicated to beer education and promoting the hobby of homebrewing and responsible alcohol consumption. Though a predecessor to the club, Alaska Fermenters, existed in 1980, GNBC was founded in 1987. At the time, Alaska State Statute prohibited brewing beer at home, and members of the club successfully lobbied the Alaska State Legislature to repeal the law. In 1995, GNBC filed paperwork with the State of Alaska to incorporate as a nonprofit. The club publishes a newsletter and holds monthly meetings, as well as sponsoring other social gatherings, educational opportunities, and homebrew competitions.
Collection description:
The collection includes copies of the club’s newsletters; one copy of the Alaskan Fermenters newsletter; materials used in a class on homebrewing; results of a membership survey; drafts of a letter to the Alaska State Legislature; subject files; photographs taken at GNBC events; and recipe books.

Acquisition note: The Great Northern Brewers Club signed a deposit agreement with the Archives in 2019, and the collection was transferred to the Archives in 2022. Additions to the collection continue to be transferred periodically.
