Biographical note:
Al Larson was a resident of Fairbanks and recorded the 1966 and 1967 North American Championships sled dog races.
The North American Championships sled dog races, sponsored by the Alaska Dog Mushers Association (ADMA), have been held by the in Fairbanks since 1946. The race is held over three days, with teams of at least five dogs racing twenty miles each of the first two days and thirty miles on the final day. Beginning in 1975, ADMA introduced a number of Limited North American Championships races for teams with specific numbers of dogs, as well as skijoring, and the original race became known as the Open North American Championships.
Collection description:
The collection consists of two 7-inch reel-to-reel audio tapes containing recordings of the 1966 and 1967 North American Championships sled dog races made by Al Larson of Fairbanks, Alaska. The 1966 tape contains a recording of the 30-mile race on the third day of the event, and is labeled as being 120 minutes.
