Organizational history:
The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a non-partisan community based organization that fights to improve the United States government and engage citizens in political decisions. The LWV does not endorse candidates or political parties. LWV of Anchorage (LWVAnc) was established in 1950 as a provisional league by Evangeline Atwood, and became a full-fledged league in 1951. LWVAnc encourages citizens to register to vote, educates citizens about the government, works with students through the Youth Vote, hosts candidate forums and educational speakers, oversees elections for organizations, and testifies at legislative and administrative hearings to ensure citizen input in policymaking decisions. LWVAnc also publishes the bimonthly newsletter The Anchorage Voter.
