Bioneers in Alaska was founded in 2004 as the local affiliate of Bioneers, a national organization that seeks to address environmental and social issues. Through the Beaming Bioneers program, affiliates, like Bioneers in Alaska, hosted local conferences concurrently with the National Bioneers Conference in October. From 2004 to 2012, Bioneers in Alaska hosted conferences at the University of Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Pacific University. The conferences consisted of workshops on topics related to sustainability, such as renewable energy, environmentally friendly building, and sustainable agriculture, with an Alaskan focus. The Bioneers in Alaska and their conferences were sponsored by Green Star, an environmental nonprofit in Anchorage, which is now part of the Alaska Forum on the Environment.
The collection consists primarily of materials relating to Bioneers in Alaska conferences, including promotional materials, programs, conference planning notes, volunteer information, DVD recordings of workshops, and workshop evaluations. The collection also contains a small amount of material from the national Bioneers organization and other local Bioneers conferences, as well as photographs.
