Biographical note:
Harry Bailey was born in Millbury, Massachusetts in 1924. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 as part of the Army Transport Service. He served as part of the crew of the Barge Self Propelled (BSP) 1923, which was detached to the the US Army Harbor Craft Detachment. Between 1944 and 1946, Bailey and the crew of the BSP 1923 sailed between the islands of the Aleutians, including Attu, Adak, and Shemya, salvaging shipwrecks and delivering supplies and personnel. Bailey took a trip to Attu Island in 1983 and died in Sutton, Massacusetts in 2013.
Collection description:
The collection consists of a narrative written by Bailey about his time serving on the BSP 1923, as well as black and white and color photographic prints. The black and white prints depict the BSP 1923 and its crew, Bailey’s Radio Signal School classmates, as well as scenes from the islands of Attu, Shemya, Adak, and Agattu in the Aleutians and various other locations in Alaska, such as Anchorage, Seward, and Dutch Harbor. The color photographs, taken during a 1983 trip to Attu Island depict buildings and scenery on the island.
