Collection summary: Historical materials relating to nursing in Alaska.

Organizational history:
Compiling these papers as a historical project for the 1975-1976 Bicentennial, Doris Southall, volunteer project director, along with Catherine Gair, Mary Richards, and Elva Scott, sent out hundreds of questionnaires to active and retired nurses requesting information about their nursing education, dates and places of experiences, as well as comments on health conditions, social and political events, and observations of daily life. The results of the survey, along with accompanying manuscript materials and photographs were deposited with the University of Alaska Fairbanks Alaska and Polar Regions Collections. Since the original gift, several additions to the collection have been made by individual donors.

Collection description:
The Alaska Nurses’ Association Collection includes materials dated 1867 to the present.  Included are corporate records of the Alaska Nurses’ Association, which was founded in 1951; histories of nursing and health care in the North; publications which include articles, manuscripts, and newsletters; completed questionnaires and memoirs submitted by nurses who have practiced their profession in Alaska; and photographs. Approximately half of the material consists of administrative records, publications, and recollections. The collection also contains field notes which document emergency health care provided to the victims of the 1964 earthquake which affected southcentral Alaska. Photographs in the collection are both of individual nurses and nursing related activities.
