Biographical note:
The Mountaineering Club of Alaska is a non-profit corporation founded in 1958. Its mission is to “maintain, promote and perpetuate the association of persons who are interested in promoting, sponsoring, improving, stimulating and contributing to the exercise of skill and safety in the Art and Science of Mountaineering.”
Collection description:
The collection consists of the newsletters and other records of the Mountaineering Club of Alaska. The newsletters are an incomplete set of copies of the club’s newsletter, Scree, dated from 1960 to 1980. The collection also contains correspondence and forms relating to the club’s committee on geographic names, two copies of the Alaska Alpine Club’s newsletter, Descent, and a copy of an unedited and partial manuscript entitled, White Winds: The Documented Story of America’s Most Tragic High Altitude Mountaineering Accident, by Joe Wilcox, and related correspondence. The manuscript concerns a climbing expedition of Mount McKinley in 1967. The collection also include a cabin journal from Whiteout Cabin, which was on the Eklutna Traverse.

Acquisition note: Part of this collection arrived with the Grace and John Vincent Hoeman papers, which was donated in 2006 by the Mountaineering Club of Alaska. The newsletters were presented to the archives by Bruce Merrell in 2007.
