Collection summary: Photograph album of an Indiana woman who visited her U. S. Army officer son and his family at Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks.
Grace P. Hurst was from Greencastle, Indiana. In the summer of 1957, she traveled to Alaska to visit her son Richard and his family in Fairbanks. Richard R. Hurst was then a major in the U. S. Army stationed at Ladd Air Force Base. She flew to Fairbanks through Chicago and Seattle. From Fairbanks, Mrs. Hurst and her son and daughter-in-law visited Fort Greeley, Valdez, Fort Richardson in Anchorage, and then returned to Fairbanks. From Fairbanks she took a flight aboard Wien Alaska Airlines to Fort Yukon and Circle Hot Springs. Her flights home included stops in Whitehorse, Juneau, Ketchikan, Seattle, Portland, and Chicago.
The collection consists of the tourist photograph album of Grace P. Hurst, who visited Alaska in 1957. The 55 page album contains: a five page typed account of her trip; 111 original black and white prints; 14 original color prints; 2 black and white photo post cards; 7 color photo post cards; travel guides, brochures and maps; newspaper clippings; and tickets, tags and other memorabilia items. Subjects of the original photographs include: Grace Hurst, her son Major Richard Hurst, his wife Fran, and their son Rick; Seattle-Tacoma Airport; Ladd Air Force Base; the University of Alaska in Fairbanks; Santa Claus House in North Pole; the Golden Days parade in Fairbanks; Fort Greeley; the Richardson, Glenn and Seward highways; Trappers Den Roadhouse; the Richardson Roadhouse; Portage Glacier; Fort Yukon; and Circle Hot Springs. Subjects of the post cards include: Eastern Airlines, Seattle, Elmendorf Air Force Base (Headquarters Building), and Sheep Mountain Lodge. The newspaper clippings concern Grace Hurst and the Richard Hurst Family.
Arrangement: The album has been retained in its original order.
