Biographical note:
Henry W. McQuie was from South Boston, Virginia.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II and was probably a member of Company D or E of the 42nd Engineers.  The unit was stationed in Cordova, Alaska in 1942, where members constructed an airfield east of town.  Henry McQuie died in Elizabethtown, North Carolina in 2002.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era photograph album of Henry W. McQuie.  The collection contains: a xerographic duplicate of the original album; original cover and one blank page of memory leaves; 194 original black and white prints from McQuie’s military service in Alaska and the Philippines; 88 original black and white prints of McQuie’s friends and family in Virginia and elsewhere; 30 black and white Alaska commercial tourist prints of Cordova area scenes; and 40 black and white preservation copy negatives of selected images. Subjects of the service photographs include: Henry McQuie and fellow soldiers in and around Cordova; heavy equipment used to construct the airfield near Cordova; Cordova street scenes, Nirvana Park, glaciers, lakes, and other area scenery; and damaged buildings and soldiers stationed in the Philippines.

Arrangement: The materials are arranged by type: original photographs, commercial prints, and copy negatives.

Acquisition note: This collection was purchased at internet auction by the Archives in 2006.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2007.  The album was disassembled and contents rehoused.
