Biographical note:

Thomas William Gregory was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1914. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1932-1935 and then worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for 35 years until his retirement in 1969. In 1956, Thomas was transferred by the FAA to Alaska, and he moved to Anchorage the following year. Thomas Gregory had two wives: Elizabeth Schmidt Gregory was his first wife and they had one son, Thomas West Gregory. Thomas William Gregory married Marion Faye Lovaas in Anchorage in 1957.  Marion Faye (Lovaas) Gregory was born in Montana in 1921, and her family later moved to Minnesota. She came to Alaska in 1955, working as an X-ray technician for the Alaska Native Health Service. Marion continued working until 1960, when their son Robert was born. Thomas Gregory was an avid skier and hiker, a member of the Anchorage Ski Club, and helped install the ski lift at Arctic Valley. He was also an active member of the National Rifle Association and the Alaska Prospectors Society. Marion Gregory was an avid gardener, a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Anchorage, and a member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. Thomas Gregory died in Anchorage in January 2005, and Marion Gregory died in Eagan, Minnesota in September 2005.

Collection description:

The collection consists of the slides, photographs, and sound recordings of Anchorage residents Thomas and Marion Gregory.  The photographs, negatives, and slides depict Thomas and Marion Gregory, other family, and friends, Thomas Gregory’s service at the U. S. Naval Station at Subic Bay, Philippines from 1954-1956, damage in Anchorage from the 1964 Alaska earthquake, the Fur Rendezvous and Iditarod race (Anchorage starts), the Alaska State Fair, various hikes in the Chugach Mountains, Kenai Peninsula, and elsewhere, and views of Kodiak Island in 1956-1967, Anchorage from 1956-2001, rural airstrips in Alaska, Arctic Valley and Alyeska ski areas, Portage Glacier, Crow Pass Trail, Hatcher Pass, and the Chilkoot Trail, among many other subjects.  There is also a set of slides that are copies of a slide show on the early history of the town of Iditarod, Alaska that was compiled by Tony Gularte.  The sound recording is a reel-to-reel audiotape of Thomas Gregory commenting on his slides of the 1964 Alaska earthquake in Anchorage.

Container list:

Series 1:  Slides, 1952-2000. 4 cubic feet.

Arranged chronologically. Note: Thomas Gregory numbered most of his slides and photographs with a numbering system that included the date (month, day, and year), plus a number for each image in a film roll (1 through 12 to 36, with repeating numbers for subsequent film rolls receiving the same date receiving a suffix of A, B, etc.). For example, slide number 01015705 would be the fifth image taken from his first slide film roll on January 1, 1957. Slide number 01015705A would be the fifth photograph taken from his second film roll used on January 1, 1957. The following inventory provides dates for every image numbered using this system, but only provides Gregory’s numbers when deemed necessary, as in the case of slides of earthquake damage in Anchorage in 1964 or early photographs.
