Biographical note:
Levi Whitner Cook was from Portsmouth, Ohio. He worked as a truck driver before enlisting in the U.S. Army at Huntington, West Virginia, on May 11, 1942. A member of the 102nd Signal Radio Intelligence Company, Cook was stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage from 1942 to 1944. Levi W. Cook died in Fairborn, Ohio, in 1996.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era photographs and papers of U.S. Army soldier, Levi Whitner Cook. The collection contains: photographs and negatives; Cook’s chauffeur’s license issued in 1938; his local draft board’s notice of classification from Portsmouth, Ohio; a notice card sent to a member of Cook’s family announcing his safe arrival at Fort Richardson; 102nd Signal Radio Intelligence Company Thanksgiving menus for 1942 and 1943, from Fort Richardson; a color illustrated Christmas Card from Fort Richardson; a luggage tag from the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway Company; 11 Alaska Department shoulder patches; 14 Fourth Service Command shoulder patches; 7 private first class chevron rank insignia patches; 8 overseas service bar patches for 2 years of service (4 gold bars each); 6 good conduct service ribbon bars; 6 Asiatic-Pacific Campaign service ribbon bars; one American Campaign service ribbon bar; an Army Signal Corps brass button; an infantry brass button; 3 brass belt buckles; a watch fob and chain; 4 uniform buttons; a State of Utah sales tax token; a Tacoma, Washington fare token; a five centavo Mexican coin; and a small denomination Japanese coin. Subjects of the photographs and negatives include: Levi W. Cook and fellow soldiers at Fort Richardson, Alaska (1942-1944), Fort Lawton, Washington (Oct. 1944), Miami Beach, Florida (Nov.-Dec. 1944), and Camp Crowder, Missouri (1942); portraits of soldiers Levi W. Cook, Marinus DeRidder, John Humphries, James Ferrers, Monroe Littell, Herbert Dye, John Thomas Kelton, and Vestil Woods; scenery, primarily in Alaska; and unidentified family members.
