Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era letters of Louise Copeland. The collection contains four letters written by Louise Copeland to her friend Madge Owen, who worked at a U. S. Army engineering office in Atlanta, Georgia. The first letter, dated September 5, 1943, was written from Seattle before leaving for Alaska. In the letter, she comments on her trip from Georgia, her travel companions, and their stay in Seattle. The second letter, dated September 22, 1943, was written from Fairbanks two weeks after arriving in Alaska. In the letter, she discusses her trip up from Seattle and describes life in Fairbanks including prices for meals, commodities and services, male friends, her friend Doris, night life, and the scenery. The third letter, dated June 16, 1944, is written from Ladd Field and comments on the long days, flowers, mosquitoes, local dwellings, and an upcoming trip to Circle. The final letter, dated August 1, 1944, was written from Ladd Field. In the letter she relates that she will be leaving Fairbanks at the end of the month and arriving home in Atlanta in September, but has not decided what to do about continuing to work for the army.
