Biographical note:
Lois A. Hornberger worked at the local hospital in Nome and Nome Air Base in 1943. She was friends with soldiers of the 81st Field Artillery Battalion stationed in Nome.
Collection description:
The collection consists of the contents of a World War II era photograph album of Lois A. Hornberger, which has been disassembled. The collection contains: 162 black and white prints from the album; an invitation and program for the official opening of the Non-Commissioned Officers Club at Nome Garrison on November 28, 1943; a program for the Fourth of July celebration in Nome in 1943, including literary exercises, general sports program, and Eskimo sports; a military pass to work at the air base dated August 11, 1943; a military pass to travel to Dexter dated September 17, 1943; an Alaska Steamship Company ticket envelope; a baggage check ticket for Star Air Lines, Inc. of Anchorage; a photo-illustrated card for the Wallace Hotel in Nome; and a letterhead sheet and envelope for Tex’s Chili Parlor in Nome, June Robinette, proprietor. Subjects of the photographs include: Lois Hornberger and friends, soldiers, sailors, and Alaska Natives; Nome street scenes and area villages; dogs, dog teams, and dog lots; Nome buildings including the hospital, bank, Board of Trade, the Polar Curio Shop, Cavey’s Liquor Store, North Pole Bakery, and City Hall; kayak and skin boat races; and a blanket toss.
Arrangement: The contents of the album are arranged by type of material. Photographs are further arranged by size.
