Biographical note:
Gene E. Tolbert was born in Kansas, in 1925. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on November 27, 1943, and served in the Air Corps during World War II. Tolbert was a surveyor for the U. S. Geological Survey in the summer of 1950, when he traveled to Alaska for fieldwork in the Haines area. Gene Tolbert died in Woodbridge, Virginia, in 1989.

Collection description:
The collection consists of a letter written by Gene E. Tolbert in Haines, to his friend, Richard V. T. Clark, in Canon City, Colorado. In the letter, Tolbert writes about his plans to attend graduate school for geology at Stanford University, his trip to Alaska aboard the S. S. Aleutian, a week-long stay in Juneau, his fieldwork and stay in the Haines area, and the paving of the highway from Haines to the Alaska Highway.
