Biographical note:
Doyle Bushman was born in Chico, California to Benjamin Harrison Bushman and Cecile B. Bushman. He grew up in Lodi, California, where he met his wife, Gloria. The Bushmans first moved to Alaska in 1949. They moved to Anchorage in 1952. While in Alaska, Doyle Bushman was employed by the Federal Aviation Administration. The Bushmans were Anchorage residents at the time of the Alaska Earthquake in 1964. Doyle Bushman died in 2008 in Tacoma, Washington. Gloria Bushman died in 2019 in Tacoma.

Collection description:
This collection consists of material collected by Doyle and Gloria Bushman that relates to the Alaska earthquake of 1964 as well as the family slides from 1953 to 1984.  The collection contains 2 five-inch, reel-to-reel audiotapes and two compact discs containing personal recordings of radio broadcasts by Anchorage stations KFQD-AM and KENI-AM during the evening of the earthquake, 1964 March 27; a VHS videocassette recording of a news feature interview with the Bushmans on earthquake preparedness by Seattle television station KOMO in 2000; correspondence, including a letter written by Doyle Bushman to family members in April 1964 describing the family’s experiences during and after the earthquake; color 35mm slides including some depicting earthquake damage in Anchorage, on the Seward Highway, and in Seward; a DVD of a slideshow of slides taken on a trip to Alaska by Doyle Bushman’s parents and two sisters with descriptions of the slides; an account of the same trip to Alaska; a cartoon drawing by Doyle Bushman satirizing early communications in Alaska; correspondence, a certificate pertaining, and retirement announcement to Doyle Bushman’s employment; reminiscences of life in Alaska by Gloria Bushman; and obituaries for both Doyle and Gloria Bushman.
