Collection summary: Papers of a former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, two-time Alaska Governor, and businessman who was very involved in northern regions public policy development.

Biographical note:
Wally Hickel was born in Kansas in 1919 and came to Alaska in 1940. He was active in politics, being elected Governor in 1966 and 1990 and also was appointed as Secretary of the Interior by Richard Nixon in 1969 where he served until being fired by Nixon in 1970. An active businessman, he also co-founded The Northern Forum, established the Institute of the North, and was heavily involved in the creation of Commonwealth North, all dedicated to public policy matters.

Collection description:
The collection consists of records documenting Wally Hickel’s career. The largest portions of the collection consist of his Secretary of the Interior records, campaign files, speech files, and correspondence files. More details as to the contents of the collection may be found in the container list below.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged into seven records series and divided into subseries within: secretary of the interior, gubernatorial records and campaigns, correspondence, speeches, subject files, and audio visual.

Separated materials: Publications were removed and added to Rare Books. The Art Hobson photograph album, which arrived with the collection in 2010, was removed and made its own collection.

Acquisition note: The first donation of papers was given to the Archives in 2003 and a deed was signed at that time. Further transfers of records occurred between 2004 and 2008. The major transfer of papers came in 2010, followed by another transfer in 2013.

Processing information: An initial guide was created by Arlene Schmuland in 2010 and updated in 2013 based on box descriptions taken from the original boxes or file cabinets. Creation of the series arrangement and detailed description was done by Jay Sylvestre in 2014.

Series 1. Subseries 1a: General correspondence; 1968-1970. 10.0 cubic feet.
General correspondence contains confirmation hearings transcripts, Senate debate transcripts, letters of congratulations, requests of Hickel for Interior related actions, as well as Alaska related actions, thank you notes, articles of interest, correspondence with Interior staff and Secretaries, letters from Congressional representatives passing on concerns from their constituents, and White House correspondence. Folders are described with the original folder titles. Arranged alphabetically by folder title.
