Biographical note:
The soldier, whose identity is unknown, was likely from Granite City in Madison County, Illinois. He served in the United States Army with the 75th Coast Artillery (Antiaircraft) Regiment. The 75th Coast Artillery was the main U.S Army unit stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, first arriving in November of 1940.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the contents of the photograph album of an soldier in the 75th Coast Artillery Regiment during World War II. The collection contains: 416 black and white photographs from the album; four strips from Lucky Strike Green cigarette cartons; a portion of a 1952 issue of The Mill, a Granite City Steel Mill publication, along with a photograph clipping concerning mill retiree Herman Hemken; two newspaper clippings from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat from 1954 concerning the trade of Enos Slaughter from the St. Louis Cardinals to the New York Yankees; a 1952 Red Man All-Star Team baseball card for Chicago White Sox second baseman Nelson Fox; and a white and yellow American Legion and a red, white, and blue colored napkin. Subjects of the photographs include: family and friends; fellow soldiers at work and recreating (snow-skiing, boating, playing with black bear cubs and a pet moose, etc.); Fort Richardson (fellow soldiers, barracks and other buildings, tent camps, etc.); downtown Anchorage; ice in Cook Inlet; the USO in Anchorage (dances, hostesses, performers); and area scenery.

Alternative formats: A xerographic copy has been made of the album to indicate the original order. Additionally, copy negatives have been made from 41 of the photographs.
