Collection summary: Photographs from a 138th Infantry soldier stationed at Adak Army Airfield.
Al Verbauen was a soldier with the 138th Infantry Regiment during World War II. He may also have been a photographer for his unit, which was most likely the first battalion of the regiment. Verbauen’s unit served in Alaska on Umnak Island and at Adak Army Airfield, among other locations. The 138th Infantry Regiment was made up of members of the Missouri National Guard, and, after returning from Alaska, was stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.
The collection consists of the World War II era photograph album of Al Verbauen. The collection contains a xerographic copy of the original album; 211 black and white photographic prints; 5 Japanese language post cards, a leaf-shaped leaflet, and a lined note page; two newspaper clippings; and 18 copy negatives of selected images. Subjects of the photographs include an unidentified training base, fellow soldiers, scenes at Adak Army Airfield and Adak Island, portraits of Al Verbauen, and Alaskan tourist prints. The two undated newspaper clippings concern the arrival of the 138th Infantry Regiment at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, after its return from the Aleutian Islands, and the Mount McKinley Army Recreation Camp.
