Biographical note:
Al Verbauen was a soldier with the 138th Infantry Regiment during World War II. He may also have been a photographer for his unit, which was most likely the first battalion of the regiment. Verbauen’s unit served in Alaska on Umnak Island and at Adak Army Airfield, among other locations. The 138th Infantry Regiment was made up of members of the Missouri National Guard, and, after returning from Alaska, was stationed at Camp Shelby, Mississippi.
Collection description:
The collection consists of the World War II era photograph album of Al Verbauen. The collection contains a xerographic copy of the original album; 211 black and white photographic prints; 5 Japanese language post cards, a leaf-shaped leaflet, and a lined note page; two newspaper clippings; and 18 copy negatives of selected images. Subjects of the photographs include an unidentified training base, fellow soldiers, scenes at Adak Army Airfield and Adak Island, portraits of Al Verbauen, and Alaskan tourist prints. The two undated newspaper clippings concern the arrival of the 138th Infantry Regiment at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, after its return from the Aleutian Islands, and the Mount McKinley Army Recreation Camp.
Arrangement: The photographs in the collection are arranged in original order.

Processing information: This collection was described, photograph album disassembled, and photographs rearranged by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2002. The collection was converted to current standard and photographs rearranged back into original order by Audrey Roy in 2014. Photographs from page 19 in the xerographic copy of the photo album are missing from the collection.
