Biographical note:
Tony Simola was a technical sergeant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He worked in the Administrative Division of the Army Engineers Area Office at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the dismantled World War II photograph album of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers soldier, Tony Simola. The album contains 131 black and white photographs. These primarily depict the people and activities of the army engineers office at Fort Richardson during Simola’s tour of duty there in 1942-1943. Included are photographs of individuals and groups of commissioned and noncommissioned officers, enlisted and civilian personnel, and friends. Known locations shown include Fort Richardson, Anchorage, and the McKinley Park Hotel (interior and exterior). Corps of Engineers officers pictured include Colonel Benjamin B. Talley, Major Dodson O. Givens, Captain Henry H. Thomas, Colonel H. M. Wilson, Colonel George Nold, and Major James D. Bush, Jr. Civilian engineers pictured include Victor C. Rivers, Robert Musser, and Alan Brandes. Other civilian employees of the corps of engineers pictured include Benzie Ola “Rusty” Dow (driver), Mrs. Brown (secretary), Pat Murray (mail section), and Vivian Norene (mail section). The collection includes U.S. Army Air Corps photos of Colonel Talley’s farewell party at Fort Richardson on June 13, 1943, and an award ceremony for Major Bush. Also included in the album are a few family photographs, including one from 1934, and four religious note cards from 1949.

Processing information: The album was dismantled, photographs rearranged by size, and collection described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2001. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Gwen Sieja in 2015. The photographs were returned to original order and the guide updated by Shu Mayer in 2022.
