Organizational history:
Indivisible: Stories of American Community is a national documentary project that examined community life in America through photographs and recorded audio interviews. The project attempts to depict the creativity, energy, and depth of local involvement by various people in twelve communities located throughout the country. It was conducted by the Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke University in conjunction with the University of Arizona’s Center for Creative Photography (CCP) with funding from a Pew Foundation grant. The project directors were Tom Rankin (CDS) and Trudy Stack (CCP). One of the twelve communities on which the project focused was the Alaskan fishing communities. The Alaska project included interviews with fishers and those involved in related work in Kodiak, Spruce Bay Old Harbor, Yakutat, Fairbanks, Sitka, Unalaska, Homer, Anchorage, and Cordova. The Alaska interviews were conducted by Jens Lund. The Alaska related photographs were taken by Lynn Davis.
