Collection summary: Papers and photographs of a managing engineer for construction of military facilities in Alaska.

Biographical note:
Harris Murdock Whiting was born in Topeka, Kansas in 1888. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and then embarked on an engineering career. His work took him to California, Washington, Alaska, Arizona, and British Columbia. From 1939 to 1942, Whiting was field engineer for the general contracting firm of Siems Drake-Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington for military projects in Alaska. The U.S. Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, Contract NOy-3750, involved construction of naval facilities at Sitka, Kodiak, Unalaska Island, Dutch Harbor, and Sand Point. From 1947 to 1952, Whiting was general manager for Drake Puget Sound for military projects concerning U.S. Navy, Bureau of Yards and Docks, Contract NOy- 13913. These projects were in Kodiak, Cape Sarichef on Unimak Island, Adak, Shemya, Cold Bay, and Attu. Harris Whiting died in 1981.

Collection description:
The collection contains Whiting’s personal papers, scrapbooks, and photographs from his time in Alaska. His personal papers include Whiting’s resume, his professional diary (1942-1943), technical reports and other information concerning military contracts for the construction of facilities in Alaska, office cartoon drawings, and an informational file on Barrow, Alaska. The collection also contains four scrapbooks, which have dismantled for preservations, and photographs of various Alaska locations.

Series 2: Scrapbooks and photographs; undated, 1936-1952

Alternative formats: The collection contains xerographic copies of the original scrapbooks indicating the original order of the materials. Copy negatives were made from selected photographs in the collection.

Separated materials: Some published material has been separated from the collection and added to the Archives’ ephemera collections. Please ask an archivist for further information.

Processing information: In 2001, the scrapbooks were dismantled for preservation purposes, photographs rearranged by size, and the collection arranged and described by Jeffrey Sinnott. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard and series combined by Veronica Denison in 2015.
