Biographical note:
Miriam “Mim” Carlson was born September 18, 1930, in Keene, New Hampshire. She received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of New Hampshire in 1952, and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Smith College in 1954. In 1956, she married Louis Carlson and moved to Salem, Oregon, where she was a sociology professor at Willamette University. After moving to Alaska in 1973, she served as a sociology professor at Anchorage Community College (ACC), and later as both director of the Social Sciences Division and as Vice Chancellor of Instruction. Mrs. Carlson was also the president of the Alaska Community College Federation of Teachers, interim Associate Vice Chancellor of the College of Community and Continuing Education, and served on the Chancellor’s Transition Team for the ACC-University of Alaska Anchorage merger. Mrs. Carlson retired in 1989 and became an adjunct faculty member at Alaska Pacific University. After retirement, she  worked on legislative committees, as well as with the United Way and was a board member of the Retired Public Employees of Alaska. Miriam Carlson died November 17, 1999, in Anchorage.
