Biographical note:
Jack Frederick Scavenius was born in Denmark in 1904. He studied at the University of Copenhagen before moving to the United States in 1927. He earned a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1954. Scavenius served as an Alaskan bush pilot from 1938-1942, and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945. From 1946 to 1950, Scavenius served as the owner and operator of McKinley Airways, in Anchorage. He served as a city councilman for Anchorage from 1948 to 1949, and was vice consul for Denmark from 1957 into the 1960s. In addition, Scavenius was a member of various professional, civic, and volunteer organizations. Jack Scavenius died in 1976.

Acquisition note: The Scavenius papers were donated to the Archives by Dr. Helen Beirne in 2000.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by Kathleen Hertel in 2000. The scrapbook was copied and disintegrating original newspaper clippings removed and destroyed. Photograph albums were disassembled and photographs sorted mostly by topic. The guide was reformatted, updated, and edited to include additional undescribed content in 2013 by Arlene Schmuland. Publications were removed to be placed in Rare Books. A large Danish flag was removed from the collection.
