Organizational history:
First Interstate Corporation of Alaska was originally founded in 1947 as Matanuska Valley Bank. The name was later changed to Alaska Bank of Commerce and then to First Interstate Bank of Alaska in 1983, when it became a franchise of First Interstate Bancorp, Los Angeles. The state of Alaska closed the First Interstate Bank of Alaska in 1987 and named the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. No record of the corporation exists after 1989.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the corporate records of the First Interstate Corporation of Alaska, parent company of First Interstate Bank of Alaska, with records of its precursers: the Matanuska Valley Bank and Commerce Bancorp. The collection includes administrative records, meeting recrods, legal records, stockholder correspondence, stockholder records, stock records, FDIC forms, Federal Reserve filings, and Securities and Exchange Commission filings.
