Collection summary: The papers of an Alaskan senator, gubernatorial candidate, and individual involved in many civic activities.

Biographical note:
Arliss Sturgulewski received a B.A. in economics and business from the University of Washington, Seattle.  An Anchorage resident since 1952, she has filled a variety of roles as a politician, volunteer, and advocate. Arliss Sturgulewski began her career in politics when she volunteered with the League of Women Voters in 1959. She also became a member of the Greater Anchorage Area Planning Commission. In 1975, Sturgulewski was elected to the position of area-wide Commissioner on the Anchorage Charter Commission.  She then went on to serve on the Anchorage Municipal Assembly from 1976-1978.  Arliss Sturgulewski broadened her service to the entire state of Alaska when she was elected to the Alaskan senate in 1978.  She continued to serve as a senator until 1992. In addition to being a senator, Arliss Sturgulewski was the 1986 and 1990 Republican nominee for Governor. In conjunction with her career in politics, Sturgulewski volunteered and was appointed to organizations concerning educational issues and public policy. A few examples include her work as a trustee with the Anchorage YMCA, Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, and the University of Alaska Foundation.  Arliss Sturgulewski was involved with the Capital Site Selection Committee and Capital Site Planning Commission. After retiring from political office in 1992, Arliss continued working with non-profit organizations and educational institutions.

Collection description:
The collection contains materials primarily relating to Arliss Sturgulewski’s political career and community involvement. The collection is divided into four series: legislative files from when she was in the Alaska State Senate; senatorial and gubernatorial election campaign files; files created while participating in various committees and organizations; and personal files containing awards, files related to her retirement and correspondence/research after retirement.  Within these series types of materials that can be found are correspondence, meeting notes, administrative records, research materials position papers, photographs, and media.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged into four series and broken up into subseries within.  Legislative files are divided by type and then by session. Campaign files are grouped according to campaign year, while committee and organization files are in alphabetical order by name. Personal papers are in rough chronological order.
