Organizational history:
The Anchorage Pioneers Oral History Project resulted in a series of transcripts from oral history interviews recorded on audio tape. Professor Stephen Haycox and Maureen Cowles conducted the interviews, and Gail Hoshiko-Reed transcribed them. Those interviewed were selected to represent a social, economic, ethnic, and experiential cross-section of early Anchorage citizens. These community pioneers either lived in the city before 1940, or came during or directly after World War II. The project was conducted through the History Department of the University of Alaska Anchorage, and was funded with a grant from the Alaska Humanities Forum.
Collection description:
The collection consists of an analytic summary narrative report and transcripts of twenty-four oral history interviews of thirty-one early Anchorage citizens and community leaders. The people represented in each interview include: Robert Atwood; John Bagoy; Albert Bailey; Glen Barnett; William Brewster; Vanny Davenport; Jean Donatello; Wanda Griffin; Lorene Harrison; Ermalee Hickel; John Johnson; Fred Klouda; Steve McCutcheon; Esther McElligott and Esther Wolfe; Frank and Adelheide Pauls; Elmer Rasmuson; Frank Reed; Charles and Inger Ricci, and Charles McMahon; William and Lillie Stolt, Richard Strutz; Charles and Molly Tryck; Lucy Whitehead, and John and Dorothy Zappa. The transcripts are arranged alphabetically by name.

Processing information: This collection was described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 1998. The guide to the collection was updated by Gwen Sieja in 2016. At this time, restricted interviews were removed from the collection and returned to the Alaska Humanities Forum.
