Biographical note:

Robert and Wilma Knox came to Anchorage in 1951. While living in Alaska, Robert G.Knox held the positions of reporter/photographer and later managing editor, of the Anchorage Daily News (1951-1954); owner and operator of the Book Cache retail bookstore (1954-1956); Chief of Technical Liason for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Alaska District (1956-1960); managing editor of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (1961); city and business editor of the Anchorage Times (1961-1967); publisher and editor of Alaska Industry magazine (1968-1981); and managing editor of Senior Voice, the publication of Anchorage’s non-profit Older Persons Action Group (1981-1984). He also edited the Alaska Quarterly magazine and the weekly newspaper, Spenard Life (1954-1956). His work as a free-lance correspondent for publications and news services included writing articles for The New York Times, Reuters, and International News Service. While in Alaska, Wilma M. Knox also worked as a journalist, writing articles independently and in collaboration with her husband. She was a writer/photographer for The Flag and Action, publications of the Northern Commercial Co. machinery division (1972-1975), and contributed articles and photographs to the magazines Agroborealis, Alaska Construction, and Alaska Industry. She also took photographs for the Alaska Dept. of Tourism, wrote articles on outdoor Alaska in the Christian Science Monitor and Popular Mechanics, and wrote a book with her husband, All About Camping In Alaska and the Yukon (1973). Robert and Wilma Knox left Alaska in 1984.

Collection description:

The collection consists of clipping and scrapbooks, photographs, publications, and other materials documenting Robert and Wilma Knox’s life and journalism work in Alaska and elsewhere. The collection includes biographical materials; trip diaries, correspondence clippings books, writing files, and photographs. Topics include the 1964 Alaska Earthquake, Chilkoot Trail, and hiking and trails.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged into series generally by document type.

This series consists of short biographies of Robert G. Knox and Wilma M. Knox, along with certificates relating to photography, Wilma Knox’s resume (ca. 1975), biographical clippings on the couple, and Robert Knox’s scrapbook from his tenure as an information officer for the Alaska District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Series 4: Robert Knox’s clippings books; 1951-1984. 0.25 cubic feet.

The clippings books primarily consist of clippings of newspaper and magazine articles authored by the Knoxes. The Anchorage Daily News book also includes some press identification cards and other materials.

Series 6: Photographs; 1953-1974. 0.8 cubic feet.

This series consists of a variety of photographs taken by the Knoxes both personally and professionally. The photographs have been sorted in two ways: the first section were grouped by subject, the remaining were grouped by size and the subseries reflect those divisions.
Series 6: Photographs. Subseries 6a: photographs by subject; undated, 1953-1964. 0.1 cubic feet.

The photographs in this series document a 1953 Cordova Airlines tour to Kennecott and McCarthy and the 1964 Alaska earthquake. A few of the Kennecott/McCarthy photographs were assigned photograph numbers by the Knoxes. The remaining numbered images are in later series. The earthquake photographs are grouped by negative size and contact prints of most of the negatives are placed with each grouping.
