Organizational history:
The Alaska Health Project was a private non-profit organization founded in 1980 to address issues of hazardous materials in the workplace and in the community. Their mission is to provide information, training, research, and related services to Alaskan organizations and individuals. Their activities have included teaching classes, writing articles and books, working with communities to identify their hazardous wastes and create management plans, completing an Alaska Hazardous Materials Incident Survey, providing hazardous materials counseling to individuals over the telephone, assisting small businesses in reducing their hazardous wastes, and teaching high school students how to recognize health and safety hazards in the workplace.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the records of the Alaska Health Project and its activities. The records include materials relating to the Board of Directors; the Director’s files; reading files; proposal, grant and contract files; records of the Hazardous Materials Counseling Service; records of the Good Earth Project; seminar, workshop, conference, and presentation files; financial records; membership records; personnel records; the Alaska Health Bulletin and other publications; and other records related to the Alaska Health Project.

Acquisition note: The collection was deposited in the archives in 1994 by the Alaska Health Project. After the organization ceased operations, a deed was signed transferring ownership of the materials to the Archives by Daniel Middaugh in 2010.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by Michele Wellck in 1997. The original order of the records was retained. Most folder descriptions below were retained from the original. The guide was updated to current format standards by Arlene Schmuland in 2015. Duplicates were removed and the collection consolidated into fewer boxes.
