Organizational history:
The Alaska Division of the National Ski Patrol System, Inc. was formed in May of 1953. The Alaska Division covers all ski areas in the state of Alaska that wish to participate in National Ski Patrol activities. The Alaska Division is divided into geographic sections which are then further divided into individual patrols. The Alaska Division includes the Southcentral, Southeastern, and Northern sections. The Southcentral section includes Anchorage, the Southeastern section includes Juneau, and the Northern section includes Fairbanks.
Collection description:
The first section of the records contains administrative files, correspondence, newsletters, testing and training materials, and records of national events. The Alaska Division records focus on the Southcentral section and include files on individual patrols and the Junior National Ski Patrol. The second section of the records includes correspondence, subject files, event files, awards documents, membership records, training records, and budget records.
Arrangement: The first portion of the collection, transferred between 1993 and 1997, is grouped by record type or topic (boxes 1-2). The second, larger, portion of the collection transferred in 2003 (boxes 2-18) appears largely unarranged. Most boxes have some chronological spans, though those overlap.
Digitized copies: Digital copies of collection material not available online. For information about obtaining digital copies, please contact Archives and Special Collections.

Related materials: Some materials relating to the Denali Ski Patrol group may be found in HMC-0055, Anchorage Ski Club records and in HMC-0396, Russell Dow papers. HMC-1080, Sourdough Ski Patrol records, includes materials sent to that sub-organization by the Alaska Division.
Acquisition note: The collection was deposited in the Archives between 1993 and 2003 by the board of the Alaska Division.
Processing information: This collection was initially arranged and described by Kathleen Hertel in 1997. The finding aid and collection was updated by Arlene Schmuland in 2010 to include the additional materials deposited in 2003. Those boxes remain mostly undescribed and materials within were retained in the order in which they were presented to the Archives. In 2010, the Sourdough Ski Patrol records were divided out from the National Ski Patrol records into a separate collection. An addition was made in 2020 by Eric Fuglestad, the historian for the Alaska Division, who also provided additional description for some of the boxes of records.
