Organizational history:
The Older Persons Action Group (OPAG) was funded in 1968 by the Office of Economic Opportunity as a delegate agency of the Greater Anchorage Area Community Action Agency in response to the Older Americans Act of 1965. OPAG serves as an advocate for senior citizens in Anchorage and in Alaska in matters relating to housing, health and welfare, legislation affecting the elderly, and others. It also works with local, state, and federal agencies to provide programs and services which benefit the elderly in Anchorage and throughout Alaska. Programs which have been administered by OPAG include the Community Food and Nutrition Program, the Nursing Home Advocate Program, a winterization program, Foster Grandparents, the Mabel T. Caverly Center, the Chugiak Senior Center, the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program, and others. One delegate agency of OPAG was the Black Arts Association and the Mountain View Neighborhood Community Center. OPAG was also responsible for organizing the Inter-Agency Council of over 40 agencies in Anchorage which provide services to the elderly. The organization publishes a monthly newspaper, Senior Voice, as well as other publications. It also hosted a radio program for seniors entitled Senior Sound.
