Biographical note:
Terry Martin was born on January 17, 1936, in Baltimore, Maryland. He received a B.A. degree in government and education from the University of Oklahoma and did post-graduate work at the U.S. Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta, Georgia; Alaska Pacific University; and the University of Alaska Anchorage. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Terry Martin came to Alaska in 1965. He is the owner of the Medical Supplies Sales Company, and is a former Public Health advisor for the U.S. Public Health Service. He is the founder of the Boys Clubs of Alaska and also served as its Executive Director. He is also the co-founder of Girls Clubs of Alaska. He was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives from 1978 through 1998.

Collection description:
The collection consists of papers relating to Terry Martin’s activities as a state representative. The majority of the collection consists of his public policy or subject research files related to his work in the Alaska Legislature. These include: the Alaska Railroad Corporation; budgets; campaign financing; charitable gaming (gambling); commerce and economic development; education; environment; ethics; fish and game management; health and social services; impeachment; the 120 day legislative session limit; marijuana recriminalization; oil and gas; reapportionment of election districts; sports; subsistence; tax policy; transportation; and the University of Alaska. The files include correspondence, bill files, reports, and various reference materials concerning their subjects. The collection also includes a small amount of photographs and some political memorabilia.

Arrangement: The collection is divided into three series: research files, photographs, and memorabilia. The research files are in two groupings: large subject files and small subject files; each grouping is in alphabetical order by subject.

The files include correspondence, bill files, reports, and various reference materials concerning their subjects. Arranged in three groupings: large files (beginning with box 1) and small files (beginning in box 15), the first two groupings are arranged alphabetically by topic. Individual files within each subject are also arranged roughly in alphabetical order. The third grouping of unsorted subject files (beginning in box 20) may contain files relating to subjects found in the previous groupings. Researchers should also check these boxes when reviewing earlier files.
