Biographical note:
Edwin Crittenden was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 26, 1915. He graduated from Pomona College in California in 1938 and received his architecture degree from Yale University in 1942. From 1942-1946, Crittenden served in the U.S. Coast Guard, moving to Alaska in 1943 and marrying Katherine “Kit” Carson. He later went on to pursue graduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1948-1949. Crittenden worked as the Technical Director of the Alaska Housing Authority, Chairman of the Anchorage Planning Commission, and Clerk of the Anchorage Platting Board. He was also appointed to the Alaska State Technical Review Board for the Historic Preservation Act (later the Historic Sites Advisory Board) in 1970, serving on the board until 1977. He was an active architect and community planner in private practice for most of his career. His Anchorage architectural firm has been known by the following names: Edwin Crittenden, Architects & Associates; Edwin B. Crittenden and Associates; CCC Architects & Planners (Crittenden-Cassetta-Cannon); CCWC (Crittenden-Cassetta-Wirum-Cannon); CCC/HOK (Crittenden-Cassetta-Cannon/Hellmuth-Obata-Kassabaum); and CCWC/HOK (Crittenden-Cassetta-Wirum-Cannon/Hellmuth-Obata-Kassabaum).

Collection description:
The collection consists of papers relating to the professional activities of Edwin B. Crittenden. Included are correspondence, writing projects, photographs, materials relating to northern construction (published and unpublished), specific planning and construction projects, visits to the Soviet Union, Crittenden’s architectural firm, and his work in historical preservation. The collection also includes many sketches created by Crittenden, both personal and work related, as well as correspondence, and family photographs, however many of the photographs are copies. The collection also contains Crittenden’s firm portfolios, work completed, and photographs of models and designs.

Custodial history: Some of the materials in part one were originally deposited with the University of Alaska Anchorage Library’s Technical Services Department, as well as Alaska Pacific University. Part two of the collection was transferred to Archives and Special Collections from the Anchorage Museum’s Archives.

Acquisition note: The materials from the Technical Services Department were transferred to Archives and Special Collections in 1984 and the materials from Alaska Pacific University were transferred to the Archives in 1989. Additional deposits were made to the Archives in 1991and 1992. Part two of the collection was transferred from the Anchorage Museum’s Archives in 2014.

Processing information: Part one of this collection was originally described by Dennis Walle and Michele Wellck in 1994. Part one was converted to current standard and publications removed from the collection and part two was added to the collection by Veronica Denison in 2014.

Location of originals: Original family photographs are with the donor and his family.

It also includes records detailing his design of buildings at Alaska Pacific University and Sheldon Jackson College, Arco Prudhoe Bay, a museum for the University of Alaska, and the design for a state office complex and town square in Anchorage.
