Organizational history:
The Chititu Mines Co. was located in the Nizina Mining District near McCarthy, Alaska. The company was administered by the Central Hanover Bank and Trust Co. under a Deed of Trust created by John E. Andrus in 1921. It operated claims on Rex and Chititu Creeks. Throughout most of its history the company’s operations were managed by Charles H. Kraemer.

Collection description:
This collection consists of administrative records of the mine in Alaska, including correspondence and records on operations, fiscal matters, and Social Security. The correspondence contains over 200 letters relating to operations, supplies, gold shipments, labor and the effects of World War II on mining in Alaska. Most of the correspondence is between Kraemer and the Central Hanover Bank and Trust Co. The operations records include proof of annual labor, mining locations and deposits of bullion. The fiscal records include inventories of supplies, check disbursements, as well as checks, vouchers, receipts, and bank statements. Other files include workmen’s compensation matters, Social Security, and the Alaska Unemployment Tax.

Acquisition note: The collection was given to the Archives by Robert Spude of the National Park Service. He received the materials from the Gagnon Family, who desired to see the materials preserved for research use.
