Biographical note:
Robert Sawicki was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts, in 1924. Sawicki was a carpenter who lived in Hatfield most of his life. After being stationed in Asia during World War II, he traveled to Alaska in 1949.

Collection description:
The collection contains a scrapbook of Robert Sawicki’s trip to Alaska. The scrapbook includes photographic postcards, photographs taken by Sawicki, postcards Sawicki sent to his brother Bernard (Bernie), and comic postcards. Subjects or locations the photo postcards depict are: Anchorage, including 4th Avenue, Fort Richardson, Lake Spenard, and Cook Inlet; Matanuska and Palmer, including Palmer School; Portage and Columbia glaciers; wildlife; the Alaska Railroad; Ketchikan; Alaska Natives; and the Alaska Highway. Subjects or locations of photographs taken by Robert Sawicki include: soldiers, buildings, and planes on Elmendorf Air Force Base and in Fairbanks; Point Woronzof; Lake Spenard; Alaska Railroad and the Matanuska Railroad Depot; stores, shops, and a parade on 4th Avenue in Anchorage; Denali National Park; caches; and Alaska scenery.
