Biographical note:
Jay Brause and Gene Dugan lived in Anchorage, Alaska until 2006. Gene Dugan founded Out North Theatre Engsemble in 1985, which Jay Brause later joined in 1990 as co-director. Jay Brause was the first executive director of Identity Inc. and researcher on the 1985 One In Ten study of LGB issues in Alaska and the 1989 Identity Reports discrimination study. Mr. Brause and Mr. Dugan spearheaded the marriage equality efforts in Alaska in the 1990s winning a favorable superior court decision in 1998 that was nullified that same year by a constitutional amendment to deny same-sex marriage.

The collection primarily consists of records relating to Mr. Brause’s and Mr. Dugan’s lives in Alaska, their civic activism, and the organizations with which they were involved. The collection includes materials related to Out North Contemporary Art House, Identity Inc., LGBT civil rights in the USA, same sex marriage, and Alaska theatre and arts groups.
