Biographical note:
Edmund Douglas was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1911. In the mid-1930s, he lived in Washington, DC, working for the Government Accounting Office. In 1938 he moved to Santa Barbara, California and married Millicent Barnes Comfort. In 1940, he opened one of the first stores in southern California to sell home television sets, and he later invested in real estate. He died in 1960 in Costa Mesa, California. In 1937, Russian aviator Sigizmund Levanevsky was on an over-the-pole flight from Moscow to the United States when his plane disappeared. Edmund Douglas joined the search party which also included Jimmie Mattern. [Biographical information provided by Katherine Arai-Hanes.]
Collection description:
The collection contains approximately 290 photographs taken by Edmund Douglas on the Levanevsky search expedition of 1937-1938. Locations photographed include Juneau, Valdez, the Richardson Highway, and Fairbanks.
Arrangement: The photographs were maintained in the groups and order in which they arrived at the Archives. They are grouped roughly by geographic area.
