Organizational history:
The Alaska Adult Education Association (AAEA) was formed in 1977 to developed effective program delivery for Alaskan adult education; enhance professional development of its practitioners; promote cooperation between practitioners, citizens, institutions, and government agencies; and advocate recognition of the field. Most active in the 1980s and 1990s, it maintained a nine-member board of directors representing all the main district regions of Alaska, published the quarterly newsletter Focus, held an annual conference, and weighed in on state and federal legislation. Sandra P. Wassillie was an original incorporator and board member of AAEA and served as president from 1978-1979 and 1982-1983.
The Northwest Adult Education Association (NAEA) was formed in 1966 to provide opportunities for connection and cooperation between adult education practitioners in Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Oregon, Saskatchewan, Washington, Montana, and the Yukon Territory. NAEA was formally dissolved in 1996. Sandra P. Wassillie was a board member of NAEA and president from 1987-1988.
Collection description:
This collection includes records from both the Adult Education Association (AAEA) and Northwest Adult Education Association (NAEA) that were collected by Sandra P. Wassillie. The AAEA records include incorporation and formation documents; correspondence from 1978-1987; and conference planning papers relating to the “Discover the Future” conference in 1983 and “Adult Educators: Strength through Diversity” conference in 1991. The NAEA records date from 1983-1996 when Sandra Wassillie was active with the organization and include policies, programs, correspondence, and formal notice of dissolution of the organization.
